Nyxcore is an aesthetic involving dark nights, nostalgia, and elements of analog horror. It mainly focuses on the ambience of the dark nights from late October through to early December (at which point Christmas often cancels out this aesthetic).

Visuals[]

The main feature of nyxcore is natural darkness (which generally results in a dark blue or black sky), which is then artificially lit using either halogen or sodium lighting aimed at the ground. Orange is the colour most featured.

Landscape features include trees, which either have shed their leaves for the winter or are evergreens; and wet tarmac, which reflects ambient light (such as moonlight).

Another important visual is messiness. Anything nyxcore must be dirty or rough around the edges. Outdoors, this involves a fair amount of mud, but it is also found in amateur and low-budget claymation.

Nostalgia is an essential element, as this aesthetic does not truly exist outside of the 1990s (except presumably in some small, isolated locations). As such, VHS and DV camera quality is used (usually with a 4:3 aspect ratio), as are the logo and brand designs of this period (see Logopedia).

This aesthetic can be compared to Halloween, but it should be noted that nyxcore is darker and associated more with November.

Fashion[]

Nyxcore fashion is simply retro. As long as the style was popular before the year 2000, it will fit the aesthetic.

Usually, however, people dress in other styles (e.g. cottagecore, goblincore, autumn, Y2K, Halloween) when experiencing this aesthetic.

Hairstyles are short (normally expressed in punk styles) and/or messy.
