UPA Revival is an aesthetic involved in the mid-1990s, inspired by the style of cartoons produced from the 1950s to 1970s, by studios such as United Productions of America (UPA), Jay Ward, Famous Studios, TerryToons and Hanna-Barbera. These cartoons had a unique style incorporating Modernism and thick outlines, therefore unpopular and not categorized in the 1980s.

History[]

UPA Revival started in the mid to late-1990s, when artists like Craig McCracken, Genndy Tartakovsky, Rob Renzetti, Mark O’Hare, Chris Battle, and Butch Hartman began using it in their series, further growing in popularity in the 2000s.

Characteristics[]

The style has overlapped with similar "retro" style revivals at the time, such as the Mission School, Shoe Diva, Groovival, and Superflat Pop.
