Pixel Medieval Fantasy is an aesthetic originating from retro medieval/medieval fantasy videogames from the 80s and 90s, often of RPG and action-adventure genres.

Origins[]

Medieval fantasy has roots in romanticism.

In the mid-20th century, Tolkien paved the way for modern medieval fantasy. He blended things like languages/mythology/fairytales/history.

A few decades later, Tolkien's influence was incorporated into the early digital age.

Tabletop roleplaying games are an ancestor to both trading card games, and RPG videogames.

Takashi Tezuka, one of the creators of Zelda, was inspired by fantasy like Lord of the Rings.
