Metrosexual is an informal term for the aesthetic of heterosexual men who take pleasure in engaging in fashion and activities considered stereotypically queer. Those men demonstrate a keen attention to grooming and appearance, also dedicating considerable time and resources to shopping for fashion.
The term was coined in 1994 and is a portmanteau of metropolitan and heterosexual, as metrosexuals often live in an urban, post-industrial, capitalist culture. It originated during an era where men dressing in flashy fashion styles were generally considered gay.
