Sensitive Content Notice ⚠️
The following article contains and discusses content that may be distressing to some readers.
Reason for Warning: This kind of aesthetic and its associated meme culture tends to involve taboo topics that can be considered very controversial and/or offensive to most people.

Edgy[1] Memes, hence the name, is a genre of memes that are deemed disconcerting, crude and/or alarming.

For similar - societal - aspect using hate and fear instead of humor and snark, see Larpercore.

These started to appear in modern[2] (2010s, peak 2012/2013 - ongoing) times, and are related to Dank[3], Surreal memes.[4][5]

Edgy (Cringe/Ironic) Memes[]

These memes are generally seen as being better than I am 14 and this is deep in that they're well-meant but come off as pretentious, and worse than Surreal Memer and Dank Meme Voyage. They are similar to "poser" subcultures such as Hipsters, Corporate Hippie, Corporate Grunge, Corporate Punk, etc. They are related to Safe Edgy[6], Busukawaii, Arabfunny and Xpiritualism. Examples of these types of memes include:

  • Example:
    • Ironic Doge Memes: Ironic Doge Memes are memes that feature the Doge meme in strange or surreal[10] circumstances. Many take the form of image macros and often feature edits to the Doge image for the purposes of dark or absurd humor. "Wacky Dog Does an Uncharacteristic Thing" is a major subgenre within the ironic trend.

Ironically:[]

One may even consider Hyperborean and Fashwave along with the aforementioned Surreal Memer, Dank Meme Voyage and arguably Void-Meme.

  • SuccessPictures, CollegeHumor (what it became - that it isn't funny anymore to the majority), BuzzFeed, BoredPanda; MostAmazingTop10, some of The Infographics Show, Kurzgesagt[12],9GAG, etc.

SuccessPictures seems to somewhat bear resemblance with/to I am 14 and this is deep, - more than not, this is caused by generational differences in society, changes in value system/order. (Goes in hand with "Born in the wrong generation" statements, stance(s and such).)

This style can be seen also in Funwaacore, which SuccessPictures shares some similarities to.

One may even consider those below as form of EM (when overdone, took too seriously or without second thought) [is it lifestyle? Or[13] parody? Post-irony?...]:

Edgelord[]

Edgelord[14] is a derogatory label used to describe someone

who exhibits extremely edgy behaviors, typically with a penchant for discussions relating to grimdark literature, nihilism and other taboo subject matters like Nazism, for the sake of offending or shocking others in online forums.

While unclear exactly when the term came into widespread usage, one of the earliest known definitions of "edgelord" was posted by redditor Malicaena on March 17th, 2013, in the context of describing a particular type of players in MMORPG Guild Wars 2:

"who tries his hardest to look very dark and dangerous so they can show everyone their 'dark side.'"

On February 19th, 2015, Urban Dictionary user Petrus4 submitted an entry for "edgelord."

Various takes[]

Beginning of snarky (self-aware) era - captions edits are still big, but they are more (but not absolutely) absurd, compared to classic memes. Meta-narrative is also more visible - themes of slanders (boomers, hypercapitalism), takes (e.g. "they are both same", "pick one (button)"); "last era(?) before corporations" and governments (still scared of internet) take these "takes" as their weapons in politics play. - Nostalgia over web2.0, "web2.5" (memes as "First generation to be raised online"[15] and mutations, Millenials follow Gen Z...)

Templates used in this era include:[]
  • No One Wants to Work Anymore (attitude; facebook/meta, twitter, NYT/NYP... screenshots - enabling Reagan-type Neoliberalism[12])
    • Before and After Corn Syrup ("I hate the Antichrist[12]")
    • "greedy boomers" taking their money to their grave(s) (or "villains laughting" edits)
      • "old money/economy Steve" captions
  • Before and After Crack mutations
  • Two Buttons
  • Running Away Balloon
  • Angry NPC Wojak - Chad vs Chud, Cobbson-type soyaks... - Cheems Chad vs Soyjak, new take on Old Meme Rage comics faces

Ironic memes[]

Ironic Memes are memes that are used satirically, usually by being deliberately humorless, crude or overused as a way to both criticize meme or meme elitist cultures. Ironic memes often spawn as a response to overuse with time, usually due to "The Family Guy Effect", as well as to simply catch those with less internet experience off-guard.

The use of ironic memes often includes the intentional overuse of older internet phenomena, like 1337 speak or <Rage Comics, as well as the use of the word "meme" as a replacement for some parts of speech, such as nouns or verbs.

Ironic memes trace back to roughly mid-2008 and were popularized on platforms like 4chan, YouTube and Reddit.[16]

Dank Memes[]

Dank memes is a term usually used in a condescending manner to refer to in-jokes that, to the one who posts it, have lost their comedic value yet continue to be posted. The use of the word "dank" has its origins in drug culture as a synonym for cool. One example of a Dank meme is the Quandale Dingle meme.

The term is used to describe jokes about British and French people, among other things, and is used as a part of memes criticizing such types of jokes and mocking those who make and enjoy them. Influencers and content creators like Hasan Piker and Cr1TiKaL have both been labeled "safe edgy."
