Cuteness is an aesthetic concept that represents a form of attractiveness often linked to youth and physical presentation. It also exists as a scientific construct within ethology, initially developed by Austrian ethologist Konrad Lorenz. Lorenz's concept, the baby schema, identifies specific facial and physical characteristics that induce a perception of "cuteness," and thereby activate caregiving instincts. The attribution of cuteness extends to individuals and objects deemed appealing or charming. The French term "mignon" describes that which is small, delicate, and soft, frequently with features that are large and stocky, or childlike. "Mignon" is a specific type of beauty, a distinct aesthetic category related to prettiness. Within aesthetic theory, cuteness has been contrasted with the sublime, based on its opposition to grandeur and intensity.

Similarly, Bambi's large eyes and gentle demeanor contribute to his portrayal as a cute and innocent character.

The Japanese aesthetic of Kawaii, emphasizing cuteness, plays a key role in various aspects of Japanese pop culture. Characters in anime and manga often feature large eyes, childlike proportions, and expressive faces. Cute characters are frequently used as mascots for brands and events. Cuteness is also incorporated into product design to increase appeal, as seen in toys, stuffed animals, packaging for food and consumer goods, and even digital interfaces and emojis.

Cuteness is frequently associated with animals, particularly those exhibiting neotenous features, which tap into humans' innate caregiving instincts. Puppies and kittens are often considered cute due to their large eyes, soft features, and playful behavior. Certain dog breeds, such as brachycephalic breeds like the French Bulldog, have been intentionally bred for exaggerated features associated with cuteness, sometimes at the expense of their health. The "puppy dog eyes" expression in domesticated dogs is believed to have been unintentionally selected for during domestication. Even some invertebrates, like tardigrades, are perceived as cute due to their small size and seemingly uncoordinated movements. Cuteness can be amplified through anthropomorphism, attributing human-like qualities to animals, as often seen in animated films and television shows, animal-themed merchandise, and online memes and viral videos.
