Hi everyone! I've had a few ideas recently for new pages and aesthetics I've identified, please lmk if you have any input! I'll probably create a couple of these and if any of them interest you, please consider looking into them and making stuff yourselves 🌸 Thank you for all your hard work!
Snackwave- this was an aesthetic around 2013-2014 based around quirky fast food references, memes, clothing etc. Here's a very good article on it. It would also be worth looking into the early art of Taylor-Ruth Baldwin (thisishangingrockcomics), I remember her drawings of pizza from around this time.
V specific 2012-2013 aesthetic: those Tumblr/Instagram girls holding random things up to the camera, like this, this and this - Early posts from the justgirlythings archive (should have no problem expanding on this aesthetic, as they mention and show pictures of everything from clothing, food, music etc...) - and beauty guru Youtubers from around that time, I specifically remember Stilababe09. It seemed to be a less environmentally-conscious, more food-focused, 'basic white girl' but extremely aesthetically pleasing version of the current VSCO trend - back when the popular girls had Tumblr! I remember this very fondly, it was honestly my personal escape in like 2013 and I very badly want it to be immortalised! Wow I'm tearing up just thinking about some of this 😢 Does anyone know what it should be called?
Teen Witch - does anyone remember Rookie Mag?? My next very fondly-recalled phase. This wouldn't have anything to do with current online paganism/witchcraft communities, it's more about the aesthetic pioneered by that magazine and its creator, Tavi Gevinson, who seemed to believe in teenage girls having an inherent occult power. The magazine showed pictures of religious-style shrines made by young readers for their favourite actors and singers and encouraged readers to reuse their old childhood toys/craft materials almost as magical objects. There were also lots of photos by Petra Collins, references to the Virgin Suicides movie, Ouija boards and occult symbols. And flower crowns!!
